It has been discovered that Medicare mistakenly paid for seniors’ Viagra. The federal program shelled out around $3.1 million for the drug.

Medicare mistakenly paid for seniors’ Viagra prescriptions, the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General discovered. In fact, it is illegal for Medicare to pay for erectile dysfunction drugs for seniors, but the health program ended up paying $3.1 million in 2007 and 2008.

Apparently, there was an error in editing software meant to block Part D coverage for Viagra. In 2005, a ban was passed to prevent the health program from covering these drugs for elderly and disabled people.

George Reeb, acting deputy inspector general for audit services at the Department of Health and Human Services said that they “should not have covered these drugs.”

A Ceres man pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud Monday. The man was cashing checks of a deceased woman and stole more than $200,000.

A Ceres man pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $200,000 in Social Security benefits intended for a friend who died in 1988, authorities reported.

Charles Francis Sheppard, 66, is to be sentenced Aug. 1 in federal court in Fresno. He faces as long as 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

He is not in custody. Federal prosecutors did not ask that he be detained, according to the U.S. attorney’s office for California’s eastern district.

Sheppard shared a checking account with Florence Eakin, who died in 1988 at age 82.

Sheppard identified Eakin and provided her personal information to the county recorder’s office, which issued the death certificate.

But the Social Security Administration was not notified. The federal agency says family or a person responsible for a beneficiary is required to notify the agency upon the death of a beneficiary.
